Thankot-Chandragiri-Bhaleshowr hiking (Chitlang Halfway trekking)

Must you have heard about the cable car at Thankot.Its at great buzz these days.Open facebook,you will find at least one post with the pics captured in Chandragiri hill cable car.The cable car connects Bhaleshowr Mahadev at the top of Chandragiri hills from Godam near Thankot.I am not writing this post to publicize or advertise the Chandgiri cable car hills ,a company that runs the cable car,but here to write about a hiking route to Bhaleshowr mahadev from Thankot.So lets begin.

You know how to get to Godam,its 9 km from Purano buspark, nearby Thankot,Once you are there ,if you want to ride on the cable car,you can ,otherwise you can hike from here to top of Bhaleshowr mahadev at the top of Chandragiri hills ,from where you can see scenic Chitlang,beatiful Kathmandu and breathtaking mountains (also you get to change your profile pics and cover pics of Facebook 😄)

From Godam head to panighat (army barrack) ,its quite easy,just follow the blacktopped road..Ask locals,if you are confused ,they will show you .Its about 5 minutes walk to Army barrack.On the way to barrack,you should see the government school on your left ,and little above about 50 metres ,there is temple to your right.So from here take the road on to your left.

Now keep on following the road till the village ends ,and you cross that small stream on the way.Keep on going through that narrow road till you reach the hotels on the side of road,in between the forest.Now from there there are two way.One through the motorway,straight to the Chandragiri hill and then to Chitlang,or another way,a walking trail,through the jungle.I suggest if you are travelling for the first time and not habitual to to hilly jungle ways,better be through the road.It will take half hour more from the road,but the scene of Kathmandu from the way to Chandragiri is woth that.Now you are on the top.From here if you go downwards,its Chitlang,that beacutful valley you see from there.If you take the right turn to up,you will reach Toplang. Now for the Bhaleshowr mahadev,take the left turn and catch that motorroad,that is on the left of this stupa (facing the Chitlang valley at south,its left).After about 30 mins walk ,its Bhalwshowr Mahadev.Congratulation.

If you have time and want to continue to Chitlang you can ,Its about 1 hour trek from Chandragiri,and 1 hour from Chitlang ,you will be in Markhu.

Hiking to Chitlang

The starting point for the trekking starts at Thankot or Godam, which is easily accessible from Old buspark and Kalanki.Once you get off at Thankot, head to Godam which is about 15 minutes from Thankot buspark.If you get off at Godam, head to Panighat. Keep following blacktopped road till you reach army barrack,and from there catch the gravelled road that is  on your left.Hike straight through the village till you reach the stream for about 15 minutes from where the village ends and the jungle starts. Little through the jungle ,you will reach the tea stops.There are two routes from here.If you are interested to walk through the jungle and take the adventure of wild flora and fauna,take the shortcut way through the forest that reaches to Chandragiri.For this ask the shopkeeper or look for walking trail.If you want to take the easier way,hike through motorway, which will take around half hour more than shortcut to reach at top. The way through the motorway is easy and you will not be confused anywhere, but through the jungle ,you might get confused.Don't worry, if you have little knowledge of direction ,then its quite easy. Just keep moving up,no straight ways till you reach the top.

                Now once you are in top, to your South is Makwanpur ( Chitlang),to your west is Dhading (Toplang) and to your north is Kathmandu. You can see Chitlang clearly from the top ,that looks like a green carpet with scattered settlements. Now there are two routes as well .Here I suggest you to take the shortcut, that is not trekking through the motor road  as it will take much longer. It wont be difficult for the trekkers because the trail is fairly wide ,not steep as it is  the trail ,through which Ranas and Kings used to travel on horses. Trek down whole way till you reach village,no confusing way anywhere in the way.It will take around  hour to reach village. There is no human settlement in the way down till you reach village, sounds adventurous right?

                Once you reach the village , you will see the rainbow trout fish keeping centre.From there, follow the paved way through village and reach Pauwa, where there is police station that takes about  20 minutes. .If you can trek little further,about 20 minutes, you can reach Narayanhiti ,and from there in around 5 minutes you can reach Swochnada Bhairav temple. At Narayanhiti  , jeeps to Kathmandu are available from here.

                Still you have time and energy, trek about 1 hour and half  ,from Chitlang, you will reach Markhu , Kulekhani.

Ok so now you are in Chitlang,what next???Where to visit??
    There are many historical places like Satdhara,Swochandda Bhairab Temple,Markhu,Kulekhani (about 2 hour walk from Chitlang),Bhedafaram,Shikhardham temple,Krishna Mandir in Bisinkhel,and lot more.

1.Swochhanda  Bhairab.

 Famous Bhairab temple located at the side of clean flowing river,near to forest,no human settlement nearby,but most beatufil and scenic place.You can worship ,visist nearby Khakhu-8, village( about 15 min from temple ,(or if you are thinking of shouting loud then do that as well because less people travel there on normal day ;-0).Just a 5 minutes from Narayanhiti,30 minutes from Shochandra Bhairab high school.

2.Satdhara

One of the iconc place in Chitlang is Satdhara,the seven stonetap with flowing water.If you are in Chitlang ,just a hour trek(maximum).Get there ,while going there you get to see the local Newar community,their culture,way of life,little bit of jungle walk.





3.Bhedafaram(Nepal's largest ground)

You must have seen that scenic beautiful layered place in lots of music videos and get amused ,does this place lie in Nepal ,yes its in Nepal ,and its Vedafaram.No word to describe the scene you are going to enjoy there.(Whenever I get there and see the Kulekhani and Markhu village,I never felt like returning home).So scenic ,like its a movie set,not a real place. A must visit place.It take about  and half hour to reach there,can get there easily by trekking straight way,consult local if you don't know road,they are always happy to help you.Need to go through jungle ,with less frequent people walking,so if you are alone think twice ,because you would be the only one to enjoy the scene ,so who would take the photo huh????

5.Krishna temple  in Bisinkhel

 This is the temple of Krishna ,famous in Chitlang,not exactly in Chitlang but about 1 and half hour walk.


6.Shikhardham

  Located at the top of  Lamichhane village,this temple of Shiva is located just below the jungle ,peaceful, and from there you can see the Chitlang that tour operators or other normally don't take you,It is at the top of  Brahmin settlement ,you get to explore the life style of people there,a real village life,culture and ways of Brahmin,a true face of Nepal.(Not all Lamichhane and Brahmin,but 99% almost).From there you can go to Khaliban,Kuchbu to experience typical  Newar and Tamang settlements.


7.Markhu,Kulekhani

 Boating,eating fish, or just seeing the beautiful lake,Markhu Kulekhani is idle place..Nepal's largest amn made lake,you will be asking yourself " is this man made???"
