After  the celebraton of Nepalese tourism year 2011,the homestay has developed in a organized manner  as a way of promoting tourism as well as local culture,tradition ,food and contributing as a source income of local people. Interview with Mr.Radha Krishna Basnet,Head of Chitlang Homestay Community Centre,Chitlang VDC.

Mr. Radha Krshna Basnet is the head of the Chitlang Homestay Community Centre,that looks after the homestay running in Chitlang VDC.He is one of the pioneer of Homestay in Chitlang and has been working since then for the development of tourism in Chitlang through the homestay.Mr. Basnet has talked with the author of this blog about the various aspects of homestay and tourism in Chitlang.

How do you describe the progress of tourism in Chitlang?

Obviously,the tourism has grown visibly in Chitlang after 2067 BS,after Nepal celebrated Nepal Tourism Year(NTY) 2011.The number of local and foreign tourist are in increasing trend and we are hopeful it will grow in future.

What may be the reasons for increasing number of tourists in Chitlang ?

There are certain factors for this increasing tourists in Chitlang.Firstly,NTY 2011 set the founding stone for tourism in Chitlang.People came to know about Chitlang as a tourist destination.Secondly increasing awareness among the people for domestic tourism promotion ,and the role of media is also notable in increasing tourist in Chitlang.Finallly but most importantly,the proximity to Kathmandu valley,yet having its own distinct identity ,be it natural or cultural ,is also the driving force for increasing tourists in Chitlang.Similarly word of mouth promotion through those visiting Chitlang has played major role in increasing tourist in Chitlang.We should not forget the contribution of local villagers and institutions in promoting the tourism in Chitlang.

Who are the major visitors of Chiltang? Are there any special target group ?

Both local and foreign tourist visit Chitlang,but its obvious that number of domestic tourists is very high.We don't have special target group,we believe Chitlang is suitable destination for everyone.Because of proximity to Kathmandu valley,most of our guest are from Kathmandu,and majority of them are students and youths.

Now let us come to homestay.As a head of Chitlang homestay Community centre,how do you see the  development of  homestay in Chiltang?

Homestay in Chitlang was  initiated in NTY 2011,and it has pivotal role in the development of tourism in Chitlang.Homestay used to accommodate tourists at the very beginning when there was no proper lodges and hotels like today.So I think homestay is the root or say backbone for development of  tourism In Chitlang. We are working to take the tourism in Chiltang to next level through the development of quality home stay experience

How many houses are  running homestay  currently?

Currently registered homestay houses in Chitlang ,under Chitlang homestay Community centre are six in number.But there are few independent unregistered homestays. Besides few are in the process of gaining the membership.

What is the criteria for running homestays ?

There are certain standards for running homestays that we are strict in so as to ensure the quality service and satisfaction of clients.The physical infrastructure,hygiene,capacity etc are all given due care.

Do you think homestay can cope with increasing tourist in Chitlang?

Till this date,we can accommodate incoming tourists,we have that capacity.We are in the process if increasing homestay houses to accommodate more tourists.But the major concern for us is to keep up the quality along with quantity .Otherwise it will loose reputation,which is not good for the hospitality sector.As of now ,we are accommodating incoming guest on the rotational basis for sustainability.

There are lots of misconceptions heard about homestays,like quality of lodging and fooding .What do you say about that?

Yes,we have heard that sometimes.We are amazed to hear that people are told that they need to cool their own food in homestays,arrange sleeping by themselves and other bad publicities. But its not  the truth,not a single.We can boast about the fact that we are no less than a quality hotel in our service.We have excellent fooding and lodging facility,availability of internet facilty ,well managed bathrooms,and sanitation.Why would we have increasing homestay guest in Chitlang if that was the case.Please be assured about our sevice.

You have been running the hometay ?What are the specialities of your homestay?

I run Chandragiri homestay ,situated at heart of village,with open environment,ethnic taste and culture.We like other homestays is strict in standard and hygeinc. We can adjust up to 35 guests in a homely environment.Local food,clean lodging,well managed parkings are our plus point.Our specialties includes drinks and beverages made of Khurpani,sishnu,Brown apple ,pears(naspati) etc.We have barbeque,campfire,music, wifi facility.We give special importance to cutomer satisfaction.
